Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground came to LA from the Factory in New York where they had collaborated to meld music with art. It was just after they released the Banana Album. On the first night we all went down to see the show and I took a series of photos of their wild performance. Andy did the psychedlic light show behind them singing on stage. They wore black leather and used whips and strobe lights in their act. The gig at the Trip lasted 3 days before they were asked to leave bacause of the controversial content of their show. The Velvet Underground stayed with us at the Castle in '66 during their gig at 'The Trip' on Sunset Strip. Hanging out with them was a blast. That's where they met Servern Darden and became fast friends. We all lived together.

Nico Dancing 1967 (38 F10)
In
1967 Nico and I hung out at John and Tom Law's home above the Sunset
Strip where she visited and we did a shoot. She tried on a dress I had
made to wear during my pregnancy with Pilar, our first child. Nico started
dancing around the back yard twirling and pirouetting and having a wonderful
time. A very special moment in all my years of photography. Nico was
an amazing woman.
Despite the tribulations endured during its brief life span, the Velvets have since become one of rock's most influential groups, especially after a new generation of bands from Bowie to Joy Division, declared their indebtedness. |
